City of Neuerburg (English by Joe Mothes)

Neuerburg, a climatic health resort in the Eifel hills bordering the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, is truly one of the most picturesque places in the very western part of Germany.
The small city, boasting a population of around 1800 lies in a protected valley surrounded by lush green hills and meadows, stuck in the middle of the German-Luxembourgian Nature Reserve. It is a dorado for hikers, bikers and horse riders.
Urban and country lifestyle meet here in ideal vacationing conditions. Well marked hiking trails, a large outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts with a club house and a well kept camping site combine with a number of hotels, restaurants, café's and attractive shops in the center.
From June to September, Neuerburg is reputed for its "Musical Summer", with open air weekend concerts of brass bands, amateur pop groups and folklore dancing.
Sightseers find ample chances to visit the towering medieval castle complex, which dates back to the 13th century with walls ruined by French troops in 1692. The inner courtyard and the chapel are open to the public without appointment.
The city's walls have been destroyed as well to a great extend - not so much by the French, but by the burgers who used the stone slabs to re-build the houses after a devastating fire in the year 1818. However, one of the guard towers is still in good repair. On top there's a fine view over the valley.
Just a five minutes walk from the castle there's a place of pilgrimage for the Holy Mother Mary - a hollow tree, which - according to a legend - gave shelter once to a knight running away from a horned husband.
The church of Neuerburg, built 1492 in Neo-Gothic style, features a netted ceiling and an old sacrament shrine. The "Gate tower", leading to the church and the castle, contains the four melodious bells and stands solitarily next to the church building - quite an unique idea for a medieval architect ...
The Market is truly the city center. It's here that the open air summer concerts take place in a pavilion and it's also here that a monument of the town's patron saint, the Holy Mother Mary was erected in 1932, when the 600th anniversary of Neuerburg was celebrated.
Motoring guests will find that Neuerburg is an ideal spot from which it is easy to visit other interesting places in the vicinity - namely Germany's oldest city, Trier, founded by the Romans, the "Maare", formerly volcanic craters, now lakes, in the vicinity of Daun and the bustling city of Luxembourg with it's almost Parisian flair.
Getting away from it all? The every day hustle and bustle of the metropolis?
Re-charge your batteries in Neuerburg!
